Most border delays have a simple cause: missing or inconsistent documents. Knowing what is required before loading keeps your cargo moving. Here are the main documents for exporting goods from Iran by road.
1. Commercial invoice
The invoice states the value of the goods and the terms of sale, and it is the basis for import duties at destination. Buyer and seller details, description, quantity, unit price, currency and delivery terms (Incoterms) must be accurate.
2. Packing list
The packing list shows what is in each package: number of packages, packing type, net and gross weight and dimensions. Customs and the carrier use it to check the cargo and plan loading.
3. Export declaration
Export goods must be declared to Iranian customs, and export formalities are completed before the cargo leaves the country.
4. CMR consignment note
The CMR note is the standard contract document for international road transport under the CMR Convention. Many countries on the route, including Turkey and the EU member states, are parties to it. At least three originals are usually issued: for the sender, the consignee and the carrier. It records the parties, places of loading and delivery, description and weight of the goods, and carriage instructions.
5. TIR Carnet
When cargo travels under the TIR procedure, the carnet lets it cross transit borders without routine inspection. Read more in What is a TIR Carnet.
6. Certificate of origin
This certificate shows where the goods were produced. In Iran it is issued by the Chamber of Commerce. Some countries require it for preferential tariffs or import control.
7. Health certificates and special permits
Food, agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and some other goods may need health or phytosanitary certificates, permits from the relevant authorities or safety data sheets, depending on the product and destination.
8. Cargo insurance
An insurance policy covers the goods against damage in transit. Agree on the type and amount of cover before loading.
Tips
- Description, weight and number of packages must match on every document; small differences can hold cargo at the border.
- Use the correct HS code for your goods.
- Check destination requirements before production or packing, not at loading.
This is a general checklist; your goods or destination may need more. Artam Tir confirms the exact document list for your shipment before loading.
